It seems Pope Francis needs to brush up on his Tertullian!

It has been reported (in The ChristLast Media, I must note) that the current Pope does not like the phrase "lead us not into temptation...

"Let no freedom be allowed to novelty, because it is not fitting that any addition should be made to antiquity. Let not the clear faith and belief of our forefathers be fouled by any muddy admixture." -- Pope Sixtus III

Animal Flesh Recipe of the Day.

The Food Network's saucy little number, Rachel Ray, offers her take on an old favorite of mine: Veal Marsala.

Veal Marsala with Egg Fettuccini

Recipe Summary
Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Yield: 4 servings

1 1/2 pounds veal cutlets for scaloppini, from the butcher counter

Salt and pepper
1/2 cup flour, a couple of scoops
4 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, 4 turns of the pan total
1 large or 2 small shallots, chopped
24 crimini (baby portobello) mushrooms, thinly sliced
1 cup Marsala
1/2 cup beef stock, from canned soups aisle
1 box, 12 to 14 ounces, egg fettuccini, cooked to al dente
Finely chopped flat leaf parsley, for garnish

Season veal with salt and pepper. Place a large piece of plastic food wrap on a cutting board or work surface. Arrange veal between cutlets on the plastic wrap. Cover veal with additional plastic wrap and a sheet of waxed paper. Gently pound out veal with meat mallet or a small, heavy frying pan. Fold veal up in its plastic and waxed paper wrapper and set aside.

Preheat a large skillet over medium high heat. Build an assembly line between the veal and the hot pan: veal, shallow dish with flour, butter and olive oil, pile of shallots and sliced mushrooms, Marsala and beef stock.

Place a large platter over low heat on the burner adjacent to your veal pan. Warm it, then turn off the heat. Begin cooking the veal Marsala just before your egg fettucini goes into cooking water; the veal will take 12 minutes, the pasta 7 or 8. If you are serving the suggested side dishes or a salad, these dishes should be assembled before the veal.

Dredge the veal lightly in flour. Saute cutlets in a single layer 2 minutes on each side. For each batch of veal, use 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan, and 1 tablespoon butter. Transfer cooked cutlets to the warm serving platter. If you have a 12 to 14-inch skillet, you should be able to make just 2 batches.

Add another tablespoon extra-virgin oil and 1 tablespoon butter to the skillet. Add half of the chopped shallots and all of the sliced mushrooms to the pan and season with salt and pepper. Saute the shallots and mushrooms for 5 minutes. Add Marsala to the pan and bring up pan drippings. Add 1/4 cup beef stock and when it bubbles, add 1 tablespoon butter to the pan to gloss your sauce. Spoon mushrooms and Marsala down over the veal. Return the pan to the stove. Add remaining extra-virgin oil, butter and remaining shallots to the skillet. Cook shallots 1 to 2 minutes. Add remaining 1/4 cup beef stock to the shallots and add the egg fettucini to the pan. Toss fettuccini with broth and butter and season with salt and chopped parsley. Transfer pasta to a serving dish and serve with warm veal Marsala.

Play still haunts Porter
After three AFC Championship game appearances, Steelers linebacker Joey Porter can finally savor a first trip to the Super Bowl and a Feb. 5 date with the Seattle Seahawks.

Even if the first missed opportunity still lingers in his mind.

Despite playing some of the best football of his seven-year career -- he has recorded sacks in all three playoff games, four dating to last season -- Porter continues to be haunted by a play he didn't make in the 2001 AFC Championship loss to the New England Patriots.

Had Porter not dropped a potential fourth-quarter interception in that 24-17 loss four years ago, the outspoken linebacker believes he'd be talking up his second Super Bowl trip, not his first.

DOWD LOVES CLINTON'S "ENDEARING" LIES (VIDEO)

Take an Antacid and watch the clip (.wmv file).

Brad Wilmouth at Newsbusters has the full transcript and more:

Olbermann: "Who has enabled this? I mean, in a perverse way, is it almost necessary to say that Bill Clinton paved the way for George Bush to conduct a kind of fingers-in-his-ears, shout la-la-la-la-la presidency?"

Dowd: "No, they're two entirely different things because when Bill Clinton would deceive, he would throw in a semantic clue that let you know he was deceiving. 'I did not have sexual relations with that woman.' We knew what he meant by that. You know, 'I did not,' about dope, 'I didn't break the laws of this country.' So it was sort of poignant and endearing. He would let you know he was lying, and then the right wing would come down so hard on him and overpunish him. And in the case of Bush, he's just in a completely different reality. You know, they call us the 'reality-based community,' and they create their own reality, and so Bush is just in a bubble. And when you're in the bubble, you don't know you're in the bubble."

So, the "right wing would come down so hard on him and overpunish him," eh, Maureen? Sort of like this:

The President was asked before the Starr grand jury about Robert Bennett's assertion during the deposition for the Paula Jones case that "there is absolutely no sex of any kind" between the President and Monica Lewinsky.

Mr. Bennett was right, Mr. Clinton said, because he was using the present tense. "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is," the President explained helpfully.

The same footnote offers three other Clintonian gems before the grand jury: "I have not had sex with her as I defined it." "It depends on how you define alone." And, "There were a lot of times when we were alone, but I never really thought we were."

Mr. Clinton's double-talk had a contagious effect on Betty Currie. "I don't want the impression of sneaking," the secretary said, about Monica, "but it's just that I brought her in without anyone seeing her." And, "The President, for all intents and purposes, is never alone."

Mr. Clinton's greatest sin is not sex or dissembling about sex, as the heavy-breathing Kenneth Starr believes. His greatest sin is swindling and perverting the American language. He is like the cursed girl in the fairy tale: Every time he opens his mouth, a toad jumps out.

His problems stem from his instinct, when he runs into trouble, to shroud rather than illuminate.

He tries to make words subjective, insisting they mean only what he wants them to. Just as he made the Democratic Party about himself, and the Democratic Conventions about himself, and the Presidency about himself, he tries to make the language about himself.

But he can't. Laws are composed of words. The President is in charge of our laws. When he drains meaning from words, he jeopardizes his ability to govern. He has made Washington Orwellian. His corrupt language corrupts thought.

Oh, wait. That was Maureen Dowd's September 16, 1998 NYTimes column--one of 10 columns about Clinton's language-perverting lies that won her the Pulitzer Prize for her "fresh and insightful" commentary.

Hmmm. What does that make her commentary now?

Man jailed for plot to kill Iraq war hero

A market stall holder who plotted to "hunt down" and kill a decorated British soldier was jailed for six years today.

British-born Abu Mansha, 21, obtained an address for Corporal Mark Byles after reading coverage in the Sun newspaper of how he led a bayonet charge in which he killed up to 20 Iraqi insurgents.

20 men with just a bayonet? Wow.

When Mansha's flat in Thamesmead, south east London, was searched by Special Branch in March last year they found a blank-firing gun in the process of being converted to shoot live rounds.

There was also a scrap of paper with the name of Cpl Byles and the word "hero", as well as a "horrific" collection of DVDs showing Osama bin Laden and the beheading of British hostage Ken Bigley.

In a two-week trial at Southwark crown court, the prosecution said the media coverage of the 35-year-old soldier's acts - which won him a Military Cross - had put him at the top of Mansha's potential hit-list.

Mansha, the son of a Pakistani-born travel agent, was convicted just before Christmas under the Terrorism Act of possessing information "likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism".

Today, Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith told him that the fact that no attack had happened was a mitigating factor in terms of his sentence, as was his lack of intelligence and the influence of others. However the judge told an impassive Mansha that despite these facts he was imposing a sentence of six years, four years less than the maximum allowed sentence. The Theology of the Body: 12. Fullness of Interpersonal Communication

In his General Audience of 19 December 1979, the Holy Father continued his series on the Theology of the Body, analyzing the absence of shame in our first parents, despite their nakedness, and its bearing on their communication.

Fullness of Interpersonal Communication

During the General Audience in the Paul VI Hall on 19 December, the Holy Father gave the following address.

1. What is shame and how can we explain its absence in the state of original innocence, in the depth of the mystery of the creation of man as male and female? From contemporary analyses of shame—and in particular of sexual modesty—we can deduce the complexity of this fundamental experience, in which man expresses himself as a person according to his own specific structure. In the experience of shame, the human being experiences fear with regard to his "second self," (for example, woman before man). This is substantially fear for one's own "self." With shame, the human being manifests almost instinctively the need of affirmation and acceptance of this "self," according to its rightful value. He experiences it at the same time both within himself, and externally, before the "other." Shame is a complex experience. Almost keeping one human being away from the other (woman from man), it seeks at the same time to draw them closer personally, creating a suitable basis and level to do so.

For the same reason, it has a fundamental significance as regards the formation of ethos in human society, and especially in the man-woman relationship. The analysis of shame clearly indicates how deeply it is rooted precisely in mutual relations, how exactly it expresses the essential rules for the "communion of persons," and likewise how deeply it touches the dimension of man's original "solitude." The appearance of shame in the subsequent biblical narration of chapter 3 of Genesis has a pluri-dimensional significance. It will be opportune to resume the analysis in due time.

On the other hand, what does its original absence mean in Genesis 2:25: "They were both naked and were not ashamed"?

Misleading analogies

2. It is necessary to establish in the first place that it is a question of a real non-presence of shame, and not a lack of underdevelopment of it. We cannot in any way sustain here a "primitivization" of its meaning. Therefore the text of Genesis 2:25 does not only exclude decisively the possibility of thinking of a "lack of shame" or immodesty. Even more, it excludes the possibility of explaining it by analogy with some positive human experiences, such as those of childhood or of the life of so-called primitive peoples. These analogies are insufficient and can even be misleading. The words of Genesis 2:25: "They were not ashamed," do not express a lack, but, on the contrary, serve to indicate a particular fullness of consciousness and experience. Above all they indicate a full understanding of the meaning of the body, bound up with the fact that they were naked.

The continuation of the Yahwist narrative testifies that this is how the text quoted is to be understood and interpreted. In it, the appearance of shame, and in particular of sexual modesty, is connected with the loss of that original fullness. Taking the experience of shame as a "borderline" experience, we must ask ourselves what does the meaning of the original nakedness which Genesis 2:25 speaks of, correspond to? To what fullness of conscience and experience, and in particular to what full understanding of the meaning of the body, does the meaning of original nakedness correspond to?

Fullness of consciousness

3. To answer this question, we must keep in mind the analytical process carried out so far, which has its basis in the Yahwist passage as a whole. In this context, man's original solitude was manifested as "non-identification" of his own humanity with the world of living beings (animalia) that surround him.

This non-identification, following upon the creation of man as male and female, made way for the happy discovery of one's own humanity with the help of the other human being. Thus the man recognized and found again his own humanity with the help of the woman (cf. Gn 2:25). At the same time, this act of theirs realized a perception of the world, which was carried out directly through the body ("flesh of my flesh"). It was the direct and visible source of the experience that arrived at establishing their unity in humanity. It is easy to understand that nakedness corresponds to that fullness of consciousness of the meaning of the body, deriving from the typical perception of the senses.

One can think of this fullness in categories of truth of being or of reality, and it can be said that man and woman were originally given to each other precisely according to this truth, since they were naked. In analyzing the meaning of original nakedness, this dimension absolutely cannot be disregarded. This participating in perception of the world—in its "exterior" aspect—is a direct and almost spontaneous fact. It is prior to any "critical" complication of knowledge and of human experience and is seen as closely connected with the experience of the meaning of the human body. The original innocence of "knowledge" could already be perceived in this way.

Meaning of communication

4. However, it is not possible to determine the meaning of original nakedness considering only man's participation in exterior perception of the world. It is not possible to establish it without going into the depths of man. Genesis 2:25 introduces us specifically to this level and wants us to seek there the original innocence of knowing. The dimension of human interiority is necessary to explain and measure that particular fullness of interpersonal communication, thanks to which man and woman were naked and were not ashamed.

In our conventional language, the concept of communication has been practically alienated from its deepest, original semantic matrix. It is connected mainly with the sphere of the media, that is, for the most part, products that serve for understanding, exchange, and bringing closer together. On the other hand, it can be supposed that, in its original and deeper meaning, communication was and is directly connected with subjects. They communicate precisely on the basis of the common union that exists between them, both to reach and to express a reality that is peculiar and pertinent only to the sphere of person-subjects.

In this way, the human body acquires a completely new meaning, which cannot be placed on the plane of the remaining "external" perception of the world. It expresses the person in his ontological and existential concreteness, which is something more than the individual. Therefore the body expresses the personal human "self," which derives its exterior perception from within.

Man's vision of God

5. The whole biblical narrative, and in particular the Yahwist text, shows that the body through its own visibility manifests man. In manifesting him, it acts as intermediary, that is, it enables man and woman, right from the beginning, to communicate with each other according to that communio personarum willed by the Creator precisely for them. It seems that only this dimension enables us to rightly understand the meaning of original nakedness. In this connection, any "naturalistic" criterion is bound to fail, while, on the contrary, the "personalistic" criterion can be of great help. Genesis 2:25 certainly speaks of something extraordinary, which is outside the limits of the shame known through human experience. At the same time it decides the particular fullness of interpersonal communication, rooted at the very heart of that communio, which is thus revealed and developed. In this connection, the words "they were not ashamed" can mean in sensu obliquo only an original depth in affirming what is inherent in the person, what is "visibly" female and male, through which the personal intimacy of mutual communication in all its radical simplicity and purity is constituted. To this fullness of exterior perception, expressed by means of physical nakedness, there corresponds the interior fullness of man's vision in God, that is, according to the measure of the "image of God" (cf. Gn 1:17). According to this measure, man "is" really naked ("They were naked"—Gn 2:25),(1) even before realizing it (cf. Gn 3:7-10).

We shall still have to complete the analysis of this important text during the meditations that follow.

Note

1) According to the words of Holy Scripture, God penetrates the creature, who is completely "naked" before him. "And before him no creature is hidden, but all are open (p anta gymn ) and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do" (Heb 4:13). This characteristic belongs in particular to divine Wisdom: "Wisdom...because of her pureness pervades and penetrates all things" (Wis 7:24).

The Theology of the Body: 11. Meaning of Original Human Experiences

In his General Audience of 12 December 1979, the Holy Father observed that, in the Genesis account, the shame at their nakedness, experienced by the first man and woman after the Fall, contrasts with their original innocence, which invites further study of their original consciousness of their bodies.

Meaning of Original Human Experiences

In the General Audience of 12 December the Holy Father resumed his catechesis on the Book of Genesis in the following discourse.

1. The analysis of the first chapters of Genesis forces us, in a way, to reconstruct the elements that constitute man's original experience. In this sense, the character of the Yahwist text makes it a special source. Speaking of original human experiences, we have in mind not so much their distance in time, as rather their basic significance. The important thing is not that these experiences belong to man's prehistory (to his "theological prehistory"), but that they are always at the root of every human experience. That is true even if in the evolution of ordinary human existence, little attention is paid to these essential experiences. They are so intermingled with the ordinary things of life that we do not generally notice their extraordinary character.

On the basis of the analyses carried out up to now, we have already realized that what we called at the beginning the "revelation of the body," helps us somehow to discover the extraordinary side of what is ordinary. That is possible because the revelation (the original one, expressed first in the Yahwist account of Genesis 2:3, then in the text of Genesis 1) takes into consideration precisely these primordial experiences. In them, there appears almost completely the absolute originality of what the male-female human being is: as a man, that is, also through his body. As we discover it in the biblical text quoted, man's experience of his body is certainly on the threshold of his whole subsequent "historical" experience. However, it also seems to rest at such an ontological depth that man does not perceive it in his own everyday life. This is so even if at the same time, and in a certain way, he presupposes it and postulates it as part of the process of formation of his own image.

2. Without this introductory reflection, it would be impossible to define the meaning of original nakedness and tackle the analysis of Genesis 2:25, which runs as follows: "And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed." At first sight, the introduction of this detail, apparently a secondary one in the Yahwist account of man's creation, may seem something inadequate or misplaced. One would think that the passage quoted cannot bear comparison with what has been dealt with in the preceding verses and that, in a way, it goes beyond the context. However, this judgment does not stand up to a deeper analysis. Genesis 2:25 presents one of the key elements of the original revelation. It is as decisive as the other texts of Genesis 2:20 and 2:23, which have already enabled us to define the meaning of man's original solitude and original unity. To these is added, as the third element, the meaning of original nakedness, clearly stressed in the context. In the first biblical draft of anthropology, it is not something accidental. On the contrary, it is precisely the key for its full and complete understanding.

3. It is evident that precisely this element of the ancient biblical text makes a specific contribution to the theology of the body, a contribution that absolutely cannot be ignored. Further analyses will confirm this. But before undertaking them, I take the liberty of pointing out that the text of Genesis 2:25 expressly requires that the reflections on the theology of the body should be connected with the dimension of man's personal subjectivity. It is within the latter that consciousness of the meaning of the body develops. Genesis 2:25 speaks about it far more directly than other parts of that Yahwist text, which we have already defined as the first recording of human consciousness.

The sentence, according to which the first human beings, man and woman, "were naked" and yet "were not ashamed," unquestionably describes their state of consciousness, in fact, their mutual experience of the body. It describes the experience on the part of the man of the femininity that is revealed in the nakedness of the body and, reciprocally, the similar experience of masculinity on the part of the woman. By saying that "they were not ashamed," the author tries to describe this mutual experience of the body with the greatest precision possible for him. It can be said that this type of precision reflects a basic experience of man in the "common" and pre-scientific sense. But it also corresponds to the requirements of anthropology and in particular of contemporary anthropology, which likes to refer to so-called fundamental experiences, such as the "experience of shame."(1)

4. Referring here to the precision of the account, such as was possible for the author of the Yahwist text, we are led to consider the degrees of experience of historical man, laden with the inheritance of sin. However, these degrees methodically start precisely from the state of original innocence. We have already seen that, referring to "the beginning" (which we have subjected here to successive contextual analyses), Christ indirectly established the idea of continuity and connection between those two states. This allows us to move back from the threshold of man's historical sinfulness to his original innocence. Genesis 2:25 makes it especially necessary to cross that threshold.

This passage, together with the meaning of original nakedness inherent in it, takes its place in the contextual setting of the Yahwist narrative. After some verses, the same author writes: "Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons" (Gn 3:7). The adverb "then" indicates a new moment and a new situation following the breaking of the first covenant. This situation follows the failure of the test connected with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. At the same time that test constituted the first test of "obedience," that is, listening to the Word in all its truth and accepting love, according to the fullness of the demands of the creative Will. This new moment or new situation also implies a new content and a new quality of experience of the body, so that it can no longer be said: "They were naked, but were not ashamed." Here, therefore, shame is an experience that is not only original, but a "boundary" one.

5. The difference of formulations that divides Genesis 2:25 from Genesis 3:7 is significant—in the first case, "They were naked, but they were not ashamed"; in the second case, "They knew that they were naked." Does that mean that, to begin with, "They did not know that they were naked," or that they did not see the nakedness of each other's body? The significant change testified by the biblical text about the experience of shame (of which Genesis speaks again, especially in 3:10-12), takes place at a deeper level than the pure and simple use of the sense of sight.

A comparative analysis of Genesis 2:25 and Genesis 3 leads necessarily to the conclusion that it is not a question here of passing from "not knowing" to "knowing." Rather, it involves a radical change of the meaning of the original nakedness of the woman before the man and of the man before the woman. It emerges from their conscience, as a fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil: "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" (Gn 3:11).

This change directly concerns the experience of the meaning of one's body before the Creator and creatures. Subsequently, the man's words confirm this: "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself" (Gn 3:10). That change, which the Yahwist text portrays so concisely and dramatically, concerns directly—perhaps in the most direct way possible—the man-woman, femininity-masculinity relationship.

6. We will have to return again to the analysis of this change in other parts of our further reflections. Now, having arrived at that border which crosses the sphere of the "beginning" to which Christ referred, we should ask ourselves if it is possible to reconstruct, in some way, the original meaning of nakedness. In Genesis, nakedness constitutes the immediate context of the doctrine about the unity of the human being as male and female. That seems possible, if we take as a reference point the experience of shame as it was clearly presented in the ancient biblical text as a "liminal" experience. We shall attempt this reconstruction in our following meditations.

First, last, and always, PRAY. Pray for the survivors. Pray for the repose of the souls of those who were killed. Pray for the families and friends. Pray for the relief workers, the cops, the firemen, the troops, and the technicians. Pray for the volunteers.

It is time to step up once again, kiddies. "Do unto others", "I was naked and you clothed me", et cetera.

As time passes, the memory of these disasters will fade for those of us fortunate enough to live outside the devastated areas, but recovery and restoration will take years.

Please, whatever you do, don't become a cynic. (I know, I know. But I just play one on the computer.) Of course there will be more horror stories like the abuse of the debit cards and that $250-odd billion federal package will produce insane amounts of corruption, but our fellow Americans will be suffering from Katrina for a long time.

Just in case you are wondering what exactly Catholics believe, here is

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy clemency hear and answer me. Amen.

St. Anthony, Martyr of Desire, pray that I may become less afraid to stand up and be counted as a follower of the Lord Jesus. Intercede also for my other intentions. (Name them.)

PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the divine power, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Super Steelers Update #1. (Myron Cope Division)

It's a no-yoi for Cope return

You wouldn't understand. It's a Pittsburgh thing.

Steelers fans want more than a win over the Seattle Seahawks on Super Bowl Sunday. They also want Myron Cope back in the broadcast booth.

Two petitions rallying support for his return surfaced online after the Steelers punched their ticket to Super Bowl XL in Detroit by defeating the Denver Broncos Sunday in the AFC Championship Game.

Three days later, more than 2,400 people have pleaded for Cope to call the game with former radio broadcast partners Bill Hillgrove, Tunch Ilkin and Craig Wolfley.

"I'm sure everyone would love to hear Myron one more time," said Davin Flateau, of Wichita, Kan., who started one of the petitions.

But it's not going to happen.

"It's really just not realistic from the standpoint of his health," said Joe Gordon, a former Steelers publicist and close friend of Cope.

Gordon, speaking on Cope's behalf, said the 77-year-old Mt. Lebanon resident was hospitalized with pneumonia just a few weeks ago. Cope has been troubled by health problems in recent years and had throat surgery in July 2004.

Bless and protect him, Lord.

He retired last summer after a 35-year broadcast career.

"To even consider getting involved in the broadcast is not possible," Gordon said.

Hillgrove said he heard about the petitions and would embrace Cope's return. But he said it wasn't likely.

"I don't know that Myron has expressed any interest in doing that," he said. "His health is his number one concern."

The Steelers did not want to discuss a possible comeback.

"The stance we're taking is he retired," said Burt Lauten, a team spokesman. "We aren't going to comment. If it happens, it happens. It's basically not on us. It's on Clear Channel."

Clear Channel Communications, parent company of Steelers' flagship station WDVE-FM, said it has not approached Cope, but planned an on-air salute to him prior to kickoff on Feb. 5.

"Due to his health, he's not going to be able to attend the Super Bowl," said Gene Romano, senior vice president of programming for Clear Channel.

Tony Moretta, of Clovis, N.M., claimed responsibility for one of the petitions. Moretta, a native of Bergholz, Ohio, said he created a post on a Steelers message board after the team's playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts to rally support for Cope's return.

"Nothing against Bill or Tunch or Craig, but it's not the same," said Moretta, who listens to WDVE's Steelers broadcasts via the Internet. "I would love to see him do it. If not, I completely understand. The man's health comes first."

Flateau, a former North Side resident, said his petition had drawn more than 1,000 names as of yesterday afternoon.

"I'm shocked how many people actually signed for the petition," he said.

"Every hour it's like another hundred."

Lynn Swann is a rich white man.

Bill Scranton fires campaign chief

Notice how rich and white and male are pejorative if you are a Repansycan.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Scranton fired his campaign manager last night after Jim Seif called Scranton’s political rival, Lynn Swann, “the rich white guy in this campaign.” Swann, a former Pittsburgh Steeler, is African-American and if elected would be the first black Republican governor. Seif made the remark during a call-in program last night on PCN, which featured him and Swann’s campaign manager. Ray Zaborney. Zaborney responded to Seif’s comment by saying, “That’s one of the most ridiculous and insulting things I’ve ever heard in politics.”

When a caller challenged Seif about his comment, Seif said that if “Mr. Swann finds that objectionable, I will apologize.”

It’s unclear whether he did. Efforts to reach Seif this morning were unsuccessful. Swann and Scranton, who are both running for governor, are currently locked in a battle for the Republican State Committee’s endorsement. Swann has already picked up two non-binding endorsements from two of the party's six regional caucuses and appears to be the front-runner for the GOP’s Feb. 11 endorsement.

Scranton, who trails Swann in the polls, recently called for the committee to refrain from making an endorsement.

Scranton attempted to reach Swann last night to apologize. In a statement, Scranton expressed regret for what Seif said. “I want to apologize to Lynn Swann, his family, supporters and PCN viewers for the offensive and disturbing comments made on my behalf.” Scranton in a statement said that Seif’s remarks, “in no way whatsoever reflect my views or those of my campaign.”

Mike DeVanney, Scranton’s deputy campaign manger, will take over Seif’s duties until a replacement is named. (Thanks to PennLive.com and the Harrisburg Patriot-News for the heads up.)

Memo To Red State Democrasses: Vote against Judge Alito at your own peril.

Robert Novak knows what's up.

AS THE SENATE moved this week toward the anticipated vote to confirm Samuel Alito, a resident of far-off North Dakota was likely to watch a heavily aired television ad. A female announcer read this:

“Along with Democrats and Republicans, newspapers across America — the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Wall Street Journal, the Fargo Forum — are endorsing Judge Samuel Alito for the U.S. Supreme Court. Yet, politically motivated liberal extremists like Ted Kennedy continue to attack Alito. Sen. Kent Conrad will soon cast his vote. Call Sen. Conrad and tell him to vote yes on Judge Alito and stand with mainstream America, not Ted Kennedy.”

Conrad, a powerful figure in the Senate as ranking Democrat on the Budget Committee, normally experiences no difficulty in making up his mind to express firm opinions. But not on the Alito confirmation. He scheduled an extra meeting with the judge on Friday, and his staff said an internal meeting to decide his vote would be held later that morning.
Facing re-election this year in the very red state of North Dakota, Conrad may be wondering what political price he might pay to vote no on Alito.

The Democratic leadership has made a calculated decision to follow Kennedy and liberal pressure groups in opposition to Alito. (Read that sentence again. One thing we know about the Democrasses: They usually do as they are told. - F. G.) Sen. Ben Nelson, up for re-election in Nebraska, at this writing is the Senate’s only Democrat to endorse Alito. Regarding this opposition as a political decision, conservative strategists are determined to play politics themselves this year against Democrats — particularly red state senators who oppose Alito.

That has opened the door for conservatives to turn the Alito confirmation into a political asset in the 2006 elections. Two unnamed donors have contributed $100,000 for current TV ads in the Dakotas to influence Democrats Kent Conrad and Tim Johnson. These same contributors, who spent $4.5 million in the 2004 election cycle, have privately committed $5 million against the re-election of red state Democrats who actually vote against Alito.

Wow. Repansycans who are willing to mix it up. What'll they think of next?

Conrad and his North Dakota colleague Byron Dorgan, Bill Nelson of Florida, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Ken Salazar of Colorado, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, and Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas are red state Democrats who voted to confirm Chief Justice John Roberts. While Roberts is no less conservative than Alito and was markedly less forthcoming in answering Senate Judiciary Committee questions, these Democrats who voted for the chief justice have been under intense pressure from the left to oppose Alito.

All such senators may be willing to risk a politically unpopular “no” vote, partly thanks to disappointing Senate Republican candidate recruitment this year. (Surprise! - F.G.) With party leaders unable to convince popular Republican Gov. John Hoeven to run in North Dakota, Conrad does not yet even have an opponent. Florida Republican leaders did not get the candidate they wanted with Rep. Katherine Harris running far behind, enabling Bill Nelson to surprise many colleagues by announcing opposition to Alito. However, conservative money now will pour into both Florida and North Dakota.

Politicizing the confirmation vote also poses problems for prominent Democratic non-incumbent candidates. Pennsylvania State Treasurer Bob Casey Jr., the nominally pro-life opponent of Republican Sen. Rick Santorum, is keeping quiet about Alito. He will be bombarded on this point in weeks to come. (Santorum better hammer him on this one. - F.G.) In New Jersey, newly appointed Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez does not have Casey’s luxury of neutrality on Alito. He is expected to vote no, threatening Italo-American votes against him this year in favor of Republican Thomas Kean (son of the former governor).

Alito strategists were delighted this week when “Friends of John Kerry” dispatched over the whole country an e-mail signed by the 2004 Presidential nominee. That facilitates the conservative tactic of linking Conrad with Kennedy and Kerry in the minds of North Dakotans if he votes against Alito.

“We can’t trust Alito to defend mainstream American values,” contended Kerry’s letter. The contention that President Bush’s nominee is outside the “mainstream” is the major talking point against Alito, but polls show support for him and his endorsement of spousal abortion notification.

That debate’s outcome may determine whether senators who vote against Alito will suffer at the polls this year and in the years ahead.

Hmmmm... that Cynthia Tucker* column wasn't a fluke...

Ann Coulter smacks down some lefties trying to have their baby and kill him too:

The Democrats are trying to "reframe" their message to make people think they believe abortion is wrong. I think this is going to be a hard sell if they plan to continue ferociously defending abortion-on-demand right up until the moment the baby's head is through the birth canal.

But both the New York Times and the Washington Post have recently run op-eds by liberals calling for Democrats to abandon their single-minded devotion to Roe v. Wade.

In the Post, Richard Cohen said it was time for liberals to "untether abortion rights from Roe." Cohen admitted that conservatives (and "some liberals," he claimed implausibly) have a point when they say abortion ought to be decided by the states. This is another way of saying abortion is not a constitutional right. Kate Michelman: Call your abortion mill!

Heehee! Hey, wait just a darn minute...

In the New York Times, William Saletan gently counseled feminists that it was time to admit: "It's bad to kill a fetus." And they say liberals have no values!

Kill a who now?

Even Jimmy Carter, the Democrats' idea of an evangelical Christian, has allowed that "I don't believe that Christ would approve of abortions." (Though Carter added that Christ would approve of abortion if "the mother's life or health was seriously endangered or the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest" – or if Jesus really, really needed the feminists to vote for him.)

That's not disrespectful or sacreligious. Jimmy Carter is an ass.

It's been a long time coming, but the Democrats are finally throwing the NARAL ladies off the boat.

One by one, the Democratic Party keeps having to abandon all the insane positions that have made it the funny, silly party we've come to know and love.

The Party of Blasphemy, Buggery, and 'Bortion!

The gun-control fanatics were thrown overboard after President Bill Clinton and a Democratic Congress passed the 1994 crime bill that banned so-called "assault weapons" – i.e., otherwise completely legal semiautomatic weapons that looked scary to Dianne Feinstein.

Heehee.

As a result, the Democrats lost Congress for the first time in 40 years and lost the South forever. When is the last time you heard a Democrat use the words "gun control"?

Ouch!

In 1995, the new Republican Congress sent a welfare reform bill to Clinton, a man who had campaigned on "mend it, don't end it" and then refused to do anything about it.

Not one Democrat resigned from the Clinton administration when Clinton turned out to be molesting the help and committing lots of felonies. But a whole slew of them resigned to protest Clinton's signing the Republicans' welfare reform bill.

You never hear a peep out of Democrats anymore about restoring government welfare programs to their former glory.

Now it's the abortion ladies' turn.

As Saletan informed feminists in his Times column:

"You can tell yourself that the pro-choice majority stayed home in the last election, or that they voted on other issues, or that Democrats botched the debate. But those excuses are getting tired. Sixteen years ago, as the behavior of voters and politicians showed, abortion was clearly a winning issue for you. Now it isn't. You have a problem."

Amen to that, Brother.

It's finally happened: Abortion stopped a bleeding heart.

Ann certainly has a way with words.

I guess Sandra Day O'Connor's demand that "the contending sides" on abortion "end their national division" and accept the court's diktat in Roe didn't work out for her.

Wow. "Diktat". That is so freakin' hot!

As Abraham Lincoln said of another moral blight on the nation supported by Democrats: You can "repeal the Declaration of Independence – repeal all past history – you still cannot repeal human nature. It will still be the abundance of man's heart, that slavery extension is wrong; and out of the abundance of his heart, his mouth will continue to speak."

Or, as Justice Antonin Scalia said, the court's refusal to overrule the lawless Roe decision would not stand because of "the twin facts that the American people love democracy and the American people are not fools."

With even liberals backing away from Roe, apparently the last group of people on Earth to realize the Supreme Court's abortion jurisprudence is a catastrophe is going to be the Supreme Court.

Not if the real Catholics can help it, Ann. Scalia, Thomas, and Roberts (We hope.) make three and Alito's on deck.

Four down and five to go.

Adeline Tancredo, Requiescat in pace.

From today's Rocky Mountain News:

Adeline Tancredo, whose spaghetti sauce recipe launched a political career for her son, U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, died Tuesday in Westminster after suffering a stroke last year. She was 92.

Mrs. Tancredo lived in Denver for most of her life, the daughter of Italian-American immigrants.

When she was 16 years old, she went to work for $1 a day as a clerk at Joslins Department store on 16th Street in Denver - a site that is now a Courtyard by Marriott hotel. She worked there for the next 45 years.
A Catholic, she married and had three sons. Every Sunday night she served up spaghetti with a homemade sauce, and her special recipe eventually would propel son Tom into politics.

In 1976, Tom Tancredo was a teacher at Drake Junior High in Arvada when students in his government class dared him to run for political office.
He agreed, and then he tried to think of his first campaign gimmick in his ultimately successful bid for the state House. He decided to print fliers with his mom's spaghetti sauce recipe on one side and a "recipe" for good government on the other.

"We had no money, of course, and we were just trying to figure out . . . something to hand out to people that was inexpensive that they wouldn't throw away," the congressman said Tuesday.

He said his mother was embarrassed by the idea at first. "I'm not sure she wanted to emphasize the ethnicity," he said. Still, she let her son jot down the ingredients as she cooked up a batch of her special sauce.

Later, she and her husband, Gerald Tancredo, would go door-to-door, passing out their son's fliers and campaigning on his behalf.

She often told her son: "Tommy, I don't know about politics. When people say, 'What does he believe in?' I say, 'I'm not sure, but he's a very good boy.' "

That, kiddies, is the definition of motherhood.

Three decades later, Tancredo is in his fourth term in Congress, and he has told the same story about his mother while stumping in Iowa for a possible 2008 presidential race.

Pray for him. We could do a lot worse. Senator War Hero, for instance.

If not for her spaghetti sauce recipe and his parents' campaigning, he figures he would not be where he is today.

Amen to that.

"I couldn't leave my job. I couldn't have campaigned," he said. "I relied on them entirely."

Mrs. Tancredo was a longtime member of St. Joan of Arc Church in Arvada.

Pray for her immortal soul, St Joan.

"She certainly was the most spiritual person I've ever known," Tom Tancredo said. "If there was ever a direct conduit to the Lord, she was it."

In May 2005, she suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed.

She was treated at the Life Care Center nursing home in Westminster. Her condition deteriorated over the weekend, forcing the congressman to cut short a tour of New Mexico stumping for immigration reform.

She died Tuesday morning at the facility.

May God have mercy on her soul and may she soon be reunited with Him.

She was preceded in death in 2003 by her husband, Gerald.

She is survived by three sons, Jerry, Ralph and Tom Tancredo, all of Littleton; two sisters, Rose Franks and Eleanor Galterio, both of Arvada; 10 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren.

Obviously, Adeline Tancredo was a great and successful woman. (Reality is not measured by the world's fickle standards.)

Arrangements were pending and were being handled by Horan & McConaty.

SEX IS DEATH. (Hot for teacher)

I came to Carthage, where I found myself in the midst of a hissing cauldron of lusts. I had not yet fallen in love, but I was in love with the idea of it, and this feeling that something was missing made me despise myself for not being more anxious to satisfy the need. I began to look around for some object for my love, since I badly wanted to love something. —St. Augustine, Confessions

This crap is quickly becoming a great argument in favor of home schooling.
There are more females teaching than males, but that doesn't explain this. Are women with disordered sexual desires drawn to positions of authority over children? Or should that be "positions of trust"?

The bottom line is this, kiddies: Teach your kiddies well and keep an eye on them because the flesh is weak.

About Me

My photo
First of all, the word is SEX, not GENDER. If you are ever tempted to use the word GENDER, don't. The word is SEX! SEX! SEX! SEX! For example: "My sex is male." is correct. "My gender is male." means nothing. Look it up. What kind of sick neo-Puritan nonsense is this? Idiot left-fascists, get your blood-soaked paws off the English language. Hence I am choosing "male" under protest.
